The australian sharemarket and dollar had only recently started to converge after the onset of high inflation in 2002. The two have recovered somewhat and, in recent months, traded in tandem in the international currencies.
In early 2013, both currencies were falling sharply. The dollar, which had once appreciated by more than 20% per day, was now in a period of contraction, falling from a high of $117.33 to just under $75.20 per dollar in early September.
The price for oil had also fallen from a low of $45 per barrel in late 2013 to below $20 on Thursday.
"At the same time the dollar was showing weakness, both currencies were also suffering from a lack of supply," said Michael Green at Nordea Bank in London, an analyst who covers currency markets.
"They were in a long running cycle of deflation and in turn low interest rates."
But Mr Green added the crash in crude prices had created a "resilience" to these markets that may have prompted the exchange rates to recover.
A fall in the dollar has meant that the price of oil and copper, both vital items for consumers in some developing nations, has also increased for traders.
But the prospect of a global recession also meant that the Australian dollar slipped against the US dollar, to a record low of 69 cents a share, during the weekend.

The South West Territories government is proposing an iconic name for the region.

Chief Minister Bill Bennett says his government has considered the name a "very thoughtful and appropriate name for a region", that will inspire locals and visitors alike.
The chief minister will outline the plans on Monday.
Bennett said the name - which will be revealed later this month, in a regional consultation process - is inspired by the history and culture of South-west Territories, and will reflect the regional community's distinctive way of life.
The name "South-West Territories", which is now being used for land and resources in the region, means something different from where a man can be seen standing on one foot, or from the land's traditional names of the South East Territories, the New South Wales and Victoria regions.
The South West Territories Government will also be in discussions with the Australian Centre for Aboriginal Affairs about the name, to inform the decision-making process.
"The South West Territories will have a name that reflects the diversity of it as a country, to attract people to the region as part of its diversity," Bennett said.
"In many ways, the name South-West Territories is part of what makes it unique as a place in the Australian continent."
Mr Bennett said regional identity would be part of the conversation, and also considered the names of "national and cultural entities" in the region, including the NT Government.
He is also looking to identify the names of local businesses, like one that operates a popular beach bar at the South West Territory Government headquarters on the Gold Coast.
In recent years, he said, there has been a shift in the nature of the community's cultural identities from a traditional way of life to a more mainstream way of life.
"I don't want to say it's all about the government. It's not, because I think that's simply not the case," he said.
"I want to make sure that what we have is a place that is welcoming of all and can be an integral part of the wider community.
"I want to make sure the people who live there are well educated and that we protect that education and we support that educational experience for future generations."
